Canadian pastors and CitCo team up to “effect change”
Earlier in the newscast we reported on the new attitude at City Hall when we spoke to Mayor Zenaida Moya. At the press conference held at CITCO’s conference room, the Mayor was flanked not by councilors, but by local and foreign religious leaders. The council has been in communication with pastors from Canada for over two years and they are inviting the public along with the business community and political leaders to a two day workshop at the Bishop Sylvestre Memorial Center this Thursday and Friday. Pastors Randy Rye and Gary Carter, authors of the book, The Power to Effect Change, are special guests at the training sessions and according to Mayor Moya, it is time for change.

“We try to emulate what has happened in Canada and we felt that whatever was done there can definitely be done in our Belize City as well. It has been close to two years and it has been a very constructive session within. It has been a series of meetings and very insightful and I know that the religious leaders who have met him already understand what more or less we will be doing during these two day sessions and clearly Pastor Gary Carter who has written the book “The Power to Effect Change”. Clearly, if one reads the book one will understand the power that is within the readings of the book.”

“”The Power to Effect Change” book is a strategy that we use in Canada for cities and working to bring community alignment. We are trying to work to integrate the church back into society. The churches have isolated themselves and have become independent and self serving really. We want to work with the politics, get involved with the politicians, get involved in the economic and social development programming and make ourselves available to serve the city. In Canada we’ve had a great partnership with our political leaders and business community and we are here to help serve the nation of Belize.”

“When it comes to the Belize City Council, what do you intend to do?”

“Well, I hope to connect our Canadian cities to Belize City and look for economic development opportunities. Alberta is an oil province in Canada; there is a lot of wealth and a lot of business leaders looking to expand around the world. One of the companies in my church does business here in Belize, one of the pip line companies. So we’re looking at economic development opportunities. We’re looking at friendships with the church through the church world and also tourism is a big thing.”
