Erosion Affects Pomona Village
According to Montero, residents have met with the principals of West End on previous occasions but the company has yet to address the concerns of the community.
Dwight Montero, Senior Farm Manager, C.P.B.L.
“This type of mining in the North Stann Creek River needs to stop so that C.P.B.L. stops losing their trees and land and the villagers can be reassured that their properties will not continue to erode. June month will be coming shortly, it’s the commencement of the flood, of the rains and floods, and I’m pretty sure that the way the present mining is taking place, C.P.B.L. will lose more trees from the erosion and also some individuals will continue losing a portion of property that borders the riverbank. So it’s a serious problem and West End needs to that when they were granted this, I’m pretty sure when they were granted their mining license, I am pretty sure it’s clearly stated in there how to do the mining in this river. So far there is no fruitful discussion because West End just continues to do what they want. C.P.B.L. has not sat with them personally and speak with them as yet but we are pretty sure that that will be forthcoming.”
