NDACC launches holiday campaign

While everyone loves to celebrate at this time of year, there are some who celebrate a little too hard and pose a hazard to themselves and others on the nation’s highways. To remind Belizeans that they must be responsible the National Drug Abuse Control Council, NDACC is carrying out a campaign called “Think Before U Drink.” Today the children were invited to a special show at the City Centre and NDACC took the opportunity to share their message about safety.

It was children entertaining children in the spirit of Christmas. The variety show hosted by the National Drug Abuse Control Council invited a number of artists to perform for the primary schools. The children enjoyed the show especially a play on the Birth of Baby Jesus.

There are seven days to go before Christmas and NDACC is making sure that this Holiday season is safe for everyone. The council has launched a campaign sending the message that alcohol wrecks lives… Think Before U Drink. According to Ornel Brooks, NDACC’s Director, the program is not only aimed at drivers but for families as well.

“We all know that during the Christmas holidays, it is vintagetime for the consumption and often there are tremendous amounts of problems that occur within the home. Money not going in from the fathers and also some mothers and quarrel among the family unit. And we are saying the less alcohol, the less drink, the greater these risk factors will be reduced.

Today in all districts there will be road safety checks. And I want to emphasize here, we are not talking about road check points which is primarily law enforcement driven, we are talking about road safety checks where we will be making and sensitizing road users to the dangers of drinking while driving. In addition to that a task force at district level will be going around from house to house making people aware and discussing with children and parents as to how we can probably run an alcohol free Christmas.”

The campaign will be conducted by NDACC staff, Task Force members, Department of Transport and Police Department.
