What Will Happen to Officer Involved?
Estrada and her brother will be filing an official complaint with the Professional Standards Branch of the Belize Police Department, at the request of Minister Musa, who says that this is an opportunity to root out rogue cops.
Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs
“I was a practicing civil attorney and many of the cases that I took on involved the very police department that I now lead as minister. It has only been six months, but we do know that it has been years and years of entrenched abuse on the part of the police department, and it is something we need to fix. It is not going to happen overnight. But there is a process, and it starts with making a complaint at the Professional Standards Branch. I know that I have the commitment of the commissioner of Police, my CEO and we are going to be very vigilant when it comes to these complaints. Because that it is exactly how you start the process of rooting out rogue cops in the system. So, it can’t happen overnight and I want to encourage all Belizeans, no matter where you are, please make a complaint if it is you feel aggrieved by any act done by the police department. I can assure you that we will follow it up and make certain that action will be taken.”
