Sugar Shake Up – Santander Issued a Manufacturer’s License
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise has notified chairpersons of the various sugar cane producers association in the north that the Santander Sugar Group has received a manufacturer’s license. This means that the company can now produce any sugar, ethanol or derivative of sugar cane under Section Fifty-eight of the Sugar Industry Act Chapter 283. With Santander now being listed as a manufacturer, its board of directors as established under the act, needs to be revised in order to fall in line with the provisions of the Sugar Industry Act. This was made formal in a letter written by Chief Executive Officer Servulo Baeza that was also copied to the Sugar Industry Control Board and Belize Sugar Industries. As we’ve reported A.S.R./B.S.I. has raised objections to government’s decision to authorize Santander to mill approximately fifty thousand tons of stand-over cane this crop season.
