Benque Teachers Go to Court on Thursday

Elena Smith

The court case for the two Benque Viejo del Carmen teachers who were arrested on Monday has been adjourned.  As was reported, two teachers were arrested and charged for a single count of “attempting to set a bonfire without the permission of the police.”  Police say the teachers were seen putting tires on the highway and preparing to set them on fire.  Police had originally detained four teachers in the Benque Area, but only two were charged.  They were to appear in court this morning.  Attorney-at-law Darrell Bradley travelled to Benque with President of the Belize National Teachers Union, Senator Elena Smith to represent the two teachers before the court.  They later learnt that a new date was being set for the hearing.

“As it relates to our teachers in Benque, they were supposed to appear before the magistrate today. That was postponed due to personal matters. And we return to court on Thursday.”
