National Garifuna Council Holds Virtual Convention
The National Garifuna Council of Belize will be hosting its annual convention over the weekend. Members will be going through the process of electing a new leader since N.G.C. president Sandra Miranda has served the maximum two terms allowed. As a first, the entire convention will be held virtually. We spoke to President Miranda about what members can expect.
Sandra Miranda, President, National Garifuna Council
“Today is only the opening ceremony so I will be giving the welcoming address. We have a guest speaker; the keynote address will be given by Mr. John Nunez who will be in Punta Gorda. If you know Mr. Nunez, he was born and grew up in the Garifuna tradition. In fact, he is from one of the families in PG who speak Garifuna to his children. He is an educator. So, I know that address will be something worth listening to as we move forward in what we are doing for the objectives of the National Garifuna Council. Tomorrow is the start of the convention where we will have the business meetings. We will update the Garifuna population on our projects. We have series of projects. They will be updated on those projects, where we are and how we move forward. Sunday we will be having the election, election of new officers. So, I will be handing over to a new team. They take over and hopefully they continue the work that has already been stated and create more.”
