Dean Flowers to Run for P.S.U. President

The Public Service Union is hosting its annual general meeting this weekend during which a new executive will be elected.  Offering himself for leadership is First Vice President Dean Flowers.  He has been at the forefront of the trade dispute between the unions and government and plans to succeed outgoing president Gerald Henry on the frontline.  Flowers describes his candidacy as a natural progression in the fight against economic injustice in the face of the ongoing industrial action.

“I have expressed interest to contest the presidency and that is by virtue of the overwhelming support and request that I’ve received, both from the branch chairs, the union’s executive and the general membership across the country.  In terms of whether or not my candidacy will go unchallenged, I cannot say.  Individuals who have interest are able to accept nomination or offer themselves for nomination up until tomorrow during the business session, as it is a two-day AGM.  Tomorrow we have the business session which runs from three to nine and at the end of that we will have nominations for the different available posts.  So it is only up until tomorrow that we will know whether or not I will be challenged for the presidency.  Myself as the first vice president has been at the consultation table, I have been at the president’s side in regards to every single issue that is facing this union and so this won’t necessarily be one of those transition whereby you’re handing over to somebody who’s not already in the belly of the beast or who’s not in the belly of the beast.  I, myself, have been in the belly of the beast ever since the issue of the consultation with government as far as the trade dispute is concerned and to be frank, I believe that I have been at the forefront of challenging this matter which as I’ve stated time and time again is an economic injustice against public officers across this country.”
