A Memorial for Supt. Henry Jemmott in San Pedro

The death of Superintendent Henry Jemmott has hit his colleagues hard and also the many people of San Pedro who knew him over the years. While his most recent posting was as commander of precinct two at Eastern Division, today San Pedranos remembered him and his contribution to their community.

Around midday today, a shrine was set up at the San Pedro Police Station in the memory of Superintendent Henry Jemmott, its former commander who was shot dead last Friday on a pier south of the island town. Residents came out to write messages of condolences for the officer. Forty-two-year-old Jemmott was a career police officer who had been working with the department for over two decades. During his career, he was the Coastal Executive Officer for the department and was most recently transferred to head precinct two of the Eastern Division in Belize City.  Today, San Pedranos joined the family in mourning the loss of a friend.

“I think the community is saddened by the loss of Mister Jemmott. Mister Jemmott was a true friend of Ambergris Caye, of San Pedro. I had the opportunity of working with Mister Jemmott both as a professional in three different aspects and as a friend. As a professional, as a justice of the peace, I used to frequent in here when Mister Jemmott was here as the O.C. and worked very closely with the police department. As a former member of the San Pedro Town Council, Mister Jemmott was always a member of our Logistic team.”

During his years of service in San Pedro, Jemmott forged great relationships with businesses and residents as well as the San Pedro Town Council. Now Mayor, Wally Nunez says they became friends over the years.

“He was a personal friend of mine. We worked together when I was a councillor in charge of security and protection of our island back in 2012 and we had a very close relationship working together for the police department. I must extend our sincere condolences to the family – to his family, friends and colleagues here in San Pedro.”

Jemmott loved fishing. In fact, the day before he died, he was out on a fishing trip. Residents share their encounters over the years with the senior officer.
