Boy hit by dump truck
A five-year-old boy is still undergoing surgery at this hour at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after being knocked down on Jane Usher Boulevard by a dump truck this afternoon. According to witnesses just after noon, Andyvan Andrews ran from his house on Flamingo Street onto Jane Usher Boulevard. Halfway across the street, he saw the truck but by then it was too late. The truck ran off the road but Andrews was trapped under the front portion. Witnesses say there was little the driver could do to avoid the accident.
Hezekiah Shiel, Eyewitness
“He just tried to mash brakes and skid off the road and he no want to put the wheel over the little boy so what happen the little boy get underneath the front of the truck. But he couldn’t come out but the driver was trying to maneuver himself but the vehicle was going too fast.”
Q: “A lot of dump trucks use this road?”
Hezekiah Shiel
“Yeah and they coming too fast through here. So you know what they should try to do, they should try to put up some bumps or something that the truck could slow down because a lot of kids live through here. And this is a poor neighborhood but these guys look like they don’t pay attention to that and kids run cross this road everyday.”
Andyvan Andrew’s mother told us this afternoon that one of his arms was severely injured and he received cuts to his face. He is being operated on by a full team of orthopedic surgeons consisting of Doctors Smith, Sosa, Rivero and Pollard. They have been in surgery since three p.m. this afternoon. Police have yet to release the identity of the driver.
