B.D.F. soldiers injured in accident near Chiquibul

Story PictureA traffic accident that occurred in the Chiquibul Area has left some B.D.F. soldiers with varying degrees of fractures. At around seven this morning, six soldiers were being driven to the Silver Camp station from Camp Belizario when the steering wheel of the vehicle developed difficulties. Driver, Private A. Lucas lost control and the B.D.F. truck overturned. One of six other occupants, Corporal Canelo was taken to the San Ignacio Hospital for minor injuries and has been released. Three others including Sergeant A. Amore and Private D. Coc were flown to K.H.M.H. for medical assistance. Lt. Coronel Ganey Dortch of the Belize Defence Force told News Five that an investigation is underway.

Lt. Colonel Ganey Dortch, Chief of Staff, B.D.F.
“Today at approximately zero seven hundred hours we got a call stating that one of our four tonner vehicles was involved in an accident in the Chiquibul Area. Fortunately for us, the seven personnel on board received minor injuries. We have four that were affected by the accident, three of whom were flown in to Karl Heusner. Three of those persons received broken bones ranging from the pelvic region to broke leg and broken arms. Preliminary investigations is turning towards a malfunction in the steering system of the four tonner. We have on the ground as we speak, a mechanic who is looking at all avenues as to what could have happened this morning.”

“What type of vehicle is this? Is this a norm or has this happened before?”

Lt. Colonel Ganey Dortch
“Not to my knowledge. We haven’t sustained any such malfunction, not to my knowledge. Also for your information, this four tonner, this vehicle was on a routine change over mission in which they were transporting troops from Camp Belizario to the camp in the Chiquibul area.”

This is not the first of it kind as in May of last year; a traffic incident involving a B.D.F. Land Rover transporting a group of recruits lost control and ended with the death of medical officer, Zaccheus Pop.
