Yabra defeats Acros Bombers
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re locked into another dish of Sports Monday. Let’s jump immediately into the Regent’s Millennium Cup Play so we go to the National Stadium where Sir George’s Acros Bombers call home as they host league leading and undefeated Culture Yabra Sunday in a turf war for bragging rights in Belize City.
It’s the seventh minute when young Tyson beats Barragan to the left but the subsequent punch can’t get past Yabra’s Willie Bo. At the other end Norman “Tilliman” Nuñez fires in heavy traffic but the ball sails high. Folks, once in a while you’ll see Esteban Hall mishandle a play in front of the goal, but this time he does.
The Bombers try to get something going down the middle and should have benefited on the advantage play when Barragan commits the high foot but the whistle halts the proceedings. It’s twenty-five minutes in when Norman Nuñez dances on the edge of the box and then unleashes a right foot that the Acros keeper can’t handle for the Yabra one-zip lead. Acros looks for the equalizer from off the right wing and while the offering shows pace it lacks direction.
Down field Yabra looks for the second from Nuñez on a push, the goalkeeper intervenes and Hall can’t come up with the rebound. On the very next play the Bombers get a one on one with Willie Bo who simply embarrasses Tyson with a crucial denial and at the half it’s still a one-nil ball game.
Must say folks that intermission brought a wonderful display of a Creole dance but let’s get back to the business of soccer. For the Bombers, second half couldn’t have started any worse. Two minutes in Tilliman finds David McCauley who makes it look too easy as Yabra goes up two-zip. Sir George and Co. try to answer with a potent slam off the spotkick just outside the eighteen but the pill inches over the crossbar. Tyson then tries to make amends with a center but his teammate fails to execute the conversion.
Meanwhile “Tilliman” looks for his second of the match and his fifth of the season but the launch curves over the stick. People, who can Tyson blame for this misfire from pointblank range but himself? A word of advice to the youth, be quick but don’t hurry. Yabra goes on to post the two-zip victory to head the class with an undefeated sixteen points after week eight.
In other scores from over the weekend, Sagitun kept Ambergris Turquoise winless with a three-one victory at Independence. Grigamandala dumped Juventus one-zip in a barn-burner at Dangriga Sunday, La Victoria mashed Real Verdes two-one at the Norman Broaster Stadium – Verdes has now lost two in a row. And San Pedro Dolphins scorched Belmopan Bandits in a one-zip affair.
Hey folks, that’s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
