Nicolas and Cayetano paintings at House of Culture
Garifuna music is flooding the airwaves in the days leading up to Garifuna Settlement Day this Friday, but images of Garifuna life in the old days are being featured in an exhibit at the House of Culture. The works of Benjamin Nicholas fondly recall his boyhood in Toledo while Pen Cayetano’s paintings depict Garifuna life in Dangriga as he remembers it. The works are on loan from the private collections of the Atlantic Bank and Joseph and Myrtle Palacio. School groups are especially invited to the show which runs through the twenty-sixth of November. A video presentation of “Garifuna Journey” is also available. Teachers are asked to call the House of Culture to arrange a time to view the show. The exhibit is free to the public. As part of its continuing relationship with Helpage Belize, the House of Culture is planning a special get together for seniors featuring Garifuna drummers and a Punta contest later this month.
