Dozens Sent Back to Belize after Illegal Entry into Mexico
While his case – whether fortunate or unfortunate – will see him repatriated to Belize, Rayan Aquino is one of over twenty Belizeans that have been sent back to the country from Mexico in the past couple months. Over two dozen others remain in detention facilities across Mexico; a number of them were trying to get to the U.S., but were nabbed by immigration authorities. Ambassador Oscar Arnold warns of the risks being taken by Belizeans when they enter Mexico illegally.

“I want to urge Belizeans that right now, land borders are closed off with the exception for essential travel and for tourists travelling into the country. We have seen a spike in individuals coming across the border but not passing through the formal immigration checkpoints and so that has to be a concern. Individuals must know that they put themselves and their lives in harm’s way when they do that because no one has a record of you entering or exiting the country.”
