Tourist Arrivals Up Despite Pandemic
Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Anthony Mahler, says the number of tourists arriving in Belize through the Phillip Goldson International Airport is increasing monthly and quickly moving towards pre-COVID numbers. This is good news for those in the tourism industry who have seen that sector shrink significantly over the past fourteen months. Minister Mahler gave us the details this morning on Open Your Eyes.

“In May, we had about almost twenty-one thousand. In June, we are looking at closer to twenty-eight thousand. So, in May we are about seventy percent of pre-COVID numbers and June we are trending towards eighty, maybe eighty two percent of pre-COVID numbers. So, the experts had said that we would be back within two years, maybe three years. We do not know how long it is going to last, but it has been a spike. The country needs the revenue, the foreign exchange. So, I am not complaining, the people in the tourism industry are not complaining.”
