President Sankat Leaving U.B.
Professor Clement Sankat is parting ways with the University of Belize after holding the post as president for the past four years. It has been confirmed that a settlement was made between Sankat and the university and so he demits office on July thirtieth. The decision was taken back in May of this year at a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the university. Chairman Anthony Sylvestre says the separation is mutual.
Anthony Sylvestre, Chairman, UB Board of Trustees
“There was a mutual agreement between Professor Sankat and the board and I can confirm and I can say unequivocally that as it relates to the settlement with Professor Sankat and the university that one can certainly be rest assured that the university has not been put to any undue or additional expense so I would characterise it that way.”

“Will he be getting his ten percent bonus and I believe ten percent gratuity – I think it is for every year based on performance?”
Anthony Sylvestre
“As I indicated to you, the settlement is one which I can unequivocally say that it will not be any additional expense to the university.”
The UB Board of Trustees has since apprised the Prime Minister and the Minister of Education of the decision and a temporary replacement will be appointed. The search now begins to find a successor. There has been widespread criticism that the leader of the national university should be a Belizean. Sankat is from Trinidad.
