Channel Five wins Ceiba de Oro Award

It may not be in a class with the Academy Awards or prizes named after Nobel or Pulitzer but on Friday night in Guatemala City ceremonies were held for the awards known as La Ceiba de Oro. The gala affair, held at the Holiday Inn, honored media houses all over Central America and for the first time included Panama and Belize. Judging was based on public opinion surveys conducted in each country and when the votes were tallied three businesses emerged at the top of the Belizean media scene. Amandala received honors as the nation’s leading newspaper, Love FM topped the polls in radio and Channel Five was declared Belize’s number one television station. In related news, technicians from B.T.L. this morning put the final touches on a fibre optic cable which connects our Belize City studios to our retransmission facility at mile thirty-two on the Western Highway. Use of the fibre optic system will provide a much clearer signal for this station’s broadcasts on Channels two and thirteen which reach viewers in the Belize Rural, Stann Creek and Cayo Districts. For the last six months Channel Five has successfully utilized B.T.L. fibre optic technology to reach viewers in Orange Walk and Corozal through the Centaur Broadcasting System.
