Katrina washes out football
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and welcome to this serving of Sports Monday. Both the local and the foreign weather media categorized the tropical depression crossing the “Jewel” over the weekend as very serious which left the sporting leadership with no alternative but to scrap all scheduled events. First to announce this decision was the Cycling Association and the softball people followed and of course the Belize Football League joined the parade.
Q: “President Maito, obviously Belize City had to be disappointed with the cancellation of the undefeated match-up between Sagitun and of course Belize City’s Culture Yabra. All across the nation as a matter of fact there were these wholesale cancellations. Could you tell us what went into that decision?”
Maito Perdomo, President, B.F.L.
“On Saturday I wasn’t here; I was at the cayes. When I came in apparently all the teams were calling in to get in touch with me to find out if we would postpone the games because of the inclement weather. As you know we had a tropical depression that was passing through. I had messages to get in touch with Dr. Chimilio. The owners had called him and he was very concerned. I called him and checking with the weather people and because of their prediction that the weather would have continued the way it was on Saturday which rained all day and after checking with them three times I waited until around six thirty and I decided that I would put it off and maybe move back the schedule one week.”
Q: “Will the league be pushing back the schedule or continuing in the weekend coming up?”
Maito Perdomo
“The executive meets tonight and we will make a decision. For myself I would like to push back the schedule one week and just continue from there, instead of postponing and having a back match. Seeing that no games were played, then we just push it back one week.”
Q: “My final question is are you happy with the way the season has been going so far?”
Maito Perdomo
“Yes, I think we’re looking at some parity among the teams right now.”
Folks, one thing that we must agree with President Maito is that there is parity in the league. Looking at the standings at the end of week six we can see Sagitun of Independence leading with three wins, three draws for a leading twelve points. Followed by Real Verdes which won three, draw two, lost one for eleven points. Culture Yabra, the favorite of Belize City fans, won two, draw four but is undefeated for ten points. Also with ten points is defending champion Juventus which has won three, draw one, lost two. La Victoria of Corozal is playing good ball; winning two, three draws and one loss with nine points. Showing eight points is the San Pedro Dolphins which has won two, drawn two, lost two. Grigamandala has won two, drawn one, lost three with seven points. They have their work cut out for them. Belmopan Bandits also has a long way to go to make it to the playoffs with one win, two draws, three losses and four points. Also with four points is Acros Bombers of Belize City a young team which has one win, one draw, four losses; the first team to lose four ball games. Ambergris Turquoise also another very young team, has yet to win a ball game; it has two draws, three losses, for a mere two points.
From listening to President Maito, we tend to conclude that the season will be pushed back which means that Sunday’s cancelled game will be played this coming Sunday. Belmopan Bandits will be at home against Acros Bombers. Real Verdes will be at the Norman Broaster Stadium facing San Pedro Dolphins. Grigamandala of Dangriga will be at home with La Victoria. Here in Belize City it’ll be a battle of supremacy when Culture Yabra faces Sagitun. Out at the caye can Ambergris Turquoise pick up its first win? It goes up against defending champion Juventus. Of course it’s never over until it’s over.
This show is over for now. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
