P.U.P. issues statement on prevalent crime
On the issue of crime, the People’s United Party today issued a release in respect of daily shootings, murders and in particular the recent grenade attack on comptroller of Customs, Gregory Gibson. The release says that “the party views with great concern the recent explosion of violent crime and lawlessness in our community. While the official statistics showed an increase in these types of criminal activity in 2008, the current trend in 2009 seems even greater cause for alarm”. The P.U.P. recalls that on Tuesday, March third, a lethal fragmentation grenade was thrown as the home of Comptroller of Customs Gregory Gibson, who at the time was at home with his wife and daughter and who could have been killed. And according to the opposition, the government has been unable to appoint a solicitor general and that an unprecedented number of alleged criminals have walked free under the tenure of the D.P.P. Just last week, says the P.U.P., Chief Justice Abdulai Conteh was forced to point out an improper collaboration between the Attorney General’s Ministry and the D.P.P.’s Office. The P.U.P. release ends with reiterating its commitment to a meaningful, serious and concerted collaboration with the government and other stakeholders in the fight against crime.
