Bze. Bank attorney says Appeals Board is not impartial
The Telemedia case was not the only high profile case that was heard in the Appeal’s Court today. And after that case, attorney for the Belize Bank, Andrew Marshalleck began arguments in an appeal by the Bank in respect of the Banks and Financial Institution Appeals Board. Marshalleck says that the composition of the Appeals Board does not appear impartial.
Andrew Marshalleck, Attorney for Belize Bank
“This arises out of the directives given by the Central Bank to the Belize Bank directing that they repay the ten million dollars to the government of Belize. The bank has challenged those directives on a number of grounds but primarily on the basis that the appeals board lacks the appearance of impartiality in that the dispute involves the government. The government has a direct interest in it and the prime minister gets to appoint the majority of the members of that board. That is the essence of that dispute.”
