Guatemalan murder suspect handed over at border
A fugitive from Guatemala was escorted by police to the border at Benque Viejo Del Carmen and handed over to Guatemalan authorities on Wednesday. Virgilio Ramirez was one of four brothers taken into custody October seventh near the southern village of San Vicente by a joint police/B.D.F. patrol when illegal weapons and ammunition were discovered in their possession. Although he initially gave a fake name, police discovered Virgilio was wanted for murder in Guatemala. Two other brothers, Roberto and Otonel Ramirez are serving time at Hattieville for the weapons and ammunition. Jesus Ramirez, was acquitted of all charges, but ordered to leave Belize. He is believed to have already left for Puerto Barrios. The incident made headlines in Guatemala with media there claiming the arrests had been made within Guatemalan territory, a charge the Government of Belize has denied.
