U.D.P. Looking into Unpaid WAVE Radio Licensing Fees

Michael Peyrefitte

Earlier this month, the Belize Broadcasting Association put several broadcasting stations on notice for failure to pay their licensing fee.  Among the stations listed, are Reef Radio of San Pedro and Dangriga Cable Vision, as well as the Opposition’s Wave Radio.  According to the B.B.A., Wave Radio Station hasn’t paid its fees for the last four years.  Now that the notice is out, the stations have the opportunity to come up with a payment schedule, but if they fail to do so, they can face their radio frequencies pulled from the air.  On Tuesday, U.D.P. Chairman Michael Peyrefitte was asked about the Wave Radio fees.

“We have to look at it and are in the process of speaking with the party leader and the leader of the opposition and all other members of the party and then we have to address the issue. But we are working to address it.”

“Any idea why it wasn’t paid for the last four years?”

“That’s what we are trying to find out; that’s what I am trying to get to the bottom. We can get to the bottom so that it doesn’t happen again but the most important thing is to clear whatever debt we have with them because that is more important than the cause of it.”
