U.D.P. “Laments” Move of Sugar to Big Creek Port
In related news, this afternoon, the United Democratic Party sent out a release in support of the stevedores. The party says the move by A.S.R./B.S.I. to transfer its operations from the Port of Belize in Belize City further south to Big Creek Port in the Stann Creek District comes despite the 2006 M.O.U. and without “affording the Christian Workers Union the courtesy of anything remotely close to meaningful consultation on the matter, instead blindsiding the union with a decision, already signed, sealed and delivered.” The U.D.P. says the move imposes additional costs on the sugar cane industry which must now transport their product double the distance. The party calls on the government to review the decision it says was made in the interest of a select few.
