Murder on Kraal Road; A Suspect is Shot Dead in Return Fire
Deadly gunfire erupted on Kraal Road on Sunday night and in the aftermath, two Belize City men lay mortally wounded. Sometime before nine o’clock, Gary Young was inside a yard near Hinds Street socializing with several other persons when a pair of men arrived at their location. Shortly after, multiple shots were fired in Young’s direction. Injured, the twenty-four-year-old got on his bicycle and attempted to ride onto Neal’s Pen Road, but he wouldn’t make it far before collapsing. His assailant, identified as thirty-one-year-old Matthew Guy, was also struck by someone who returned fired from the property. This morning, Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood described the circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter.
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department
“Sometime around 8:30 last night, police visited a yard at the corner of Hinds Street and Kraal Road where they gathered information that Mr. Gary Young was transported to the K.H.M.H. with gunshot injuries. It’s unfortunate that when the police went to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital he had already passed away within like ten minutes or so of police receiving that report. We understand that Mr. Young was in a yard with other persons socializing when Matthew Guy arrived at that place along with another person and opened fire on the crowd. Unfortunately, Mr. Young got hit and rode off in the vicinity of Pen Road where he collapsed and later transported to Karl Heusner [Memorial Hospital]. Whilst Guy was fleeing the scene, someone from in that group returned fire and caught Mr. Guy who was also rushed to the K.H.M.H. and succumbed to his injury.”
