Caye Caulker Marine Reserve Gets Monitoring Equipment

The Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, which is located on the northern end of the island, is a prime spot for snorkeling. On Monday, the Reserve was given special attention. Through the Sustainable Tourism Project, a five-year loan agreement between the Government and the Inter-American Development Bank, the Marine Reserve received equipment that will assist in proper monitoring of the area to ensure that it is kept pristine for years to come. Previously, the project was carried out by one Ministry, but under the current Government, the Ministries of Tourism and the Blue Economy are collaborating.  Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Tourism, Nicole Solano explained that the area is among several others selected for preservation.

“This project is a wide project so it covers a wide range of areas throughout the country. And over the period of the project there have been many different deliverables from specific areas identified. Areas in Corozal, Punta Gorda, in Caye Caulker – there are different areas within Belize that have been covered under this particular project. You may remember a couple weeks ago there was the handing over of the Toledo Plaza. That was also a part of this project.  In the original documents we identified the areas that are important for development from a product-development standpoint and we try to identify what is needed.”
