Liberalism and the Church

The ongoing discussion on marijuana legalization has led to progressive views being shared in the public discourse.  As open-minded as those opinions may be, the Council of Churches maintains that there should be certain constraints.  Bishop Moses Benguche explains.

“Liberalism has its dynamics but also its limitations.  There are some things in society that some people would like to do and they will call that liberalism, but is it within the framework of the law and the ambit of society?  Is it good for society?  These are some of the things that we must, in Belize, begin to ask and it involves the use of marijuana and the ill effect insofar as health and society is concerned.  And so, as we speak of liberalism, liberalism must also be taken in its context and its dynamics and one has to be careful not to use liberalism loosely, lest next thing you know we become a lawless society.  And I believe that the church is there to be able to help spearhead the whole issue of law, the whole issue of spirituality and the whole issue of discipline.  And the church is a voice, not only insofar as the factor of the spiritual things are concerned, but the social ills of society.”
