Senator could face contempt of court charge

Story Picture
United Democratic Party Senator Audrey Matura-Tillett is in the news again. This time her comments in her weekly column in the Guardian Newspaper, of which she is also the editor, have raised the hackles of the Director of Public Prosecutions Adolph Lucas. News Five confirmed today with the Registrar General that the D.P.P. has filed an application to bring contempt of court proceedings against Matura-Tillett for an article in the September twenty-sixth issue. The article in question allegedly casts aspersions on two Supreme Court Justices, and the quality of justice rendered by the Supreme Court. Today the U.D.P. issued a statement in support of their Senator and said they will use every available resource “to defend and vindicate her”. They say her concern about the judiciary was the subject of a resolution passed at the Party’s National Convention on October third. If found guilty Matura-Tillett could face jail time or a fine, or both.
