Boys’ Carwash Expands, Gets Donations

Their story got over half a million views on News Five’s Facebook two weeks ago; this week, the south side car wash boys are in the news again, getting equipment donations and expanding to meet growing customer demand.   Paul Lopez reports.

Myrick August, M&R Carwash

“It feels very good, because I didn’t think we will get all this stuff. First I thought we would just wash some cars and I never knew we would get so big. I like the support.”

Since we interviewed Myrick and Reginald two weeks ago, their business has seen tremendous support from the community. A week ago, a donor from New York gifted the young men with a vacuum cleaner. Today, the Minister of Youth and the Department of Youth Services gifted them with a power washer.

“When I saw this on the news, myself and my director immediately jumped on this. I said, this is the type of things that encourages me to want to do more for our young people.  This gives us hope that there are opportunities. There are young people that want to make a difference in their communities.”

When we first spoke to the youngsters, the carwash was a two man initiative. Myrick and Reginald have since employed eleven-year-old Caelan Meighan.

“I think he just turn eleven this year.”

“And what is he doing?”

Myrick August

“He could do the vacuum better than me. So I just make he do the inside.”

“I mean we learnt just now that they employed a younger person. This shows you, this is very much touching for us. I think it’s something that we must encourage, we must support. Today, this gesture is just for us to encourage these young people to do even more.”

M&R Carwash continues to operate from Myrick’s residence at 75 Fabers Road in Belize City. For now, they do daily washes. Their operations will move to the weekends exclusively when they return to school in a couple weeks.

“I just want to thank everyone who supported us in giving us a power wash and vacuum, and the rest of the supplies.”
