Was Dangriga Teen Mistakenly Killed?

Kwamie Williams

Official details from the Belize Police Department on the murder of Kwamie Williams were shared at today’s press briefing in Belize City. The fourteen-year-old was shot dead as he was walking to a relative’s house on Gumagarugu Street in Dangriga. The gunman, who was on a bicycle reportedly made an about turn firing the deadly shot. Today, Superintendent Alejandro Cowo told the media that Williams’ killing may have been a case of mistaken identity.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division

“Whilst he was walking, he was approached by someone who fired several shots at his direction causing his fatal death. So far, police have one person in custody. The investigation is going very well and probably there will be some charges later on this week.”

“Is there any explanation as to why this minor was targeted?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“Well I have spoken with the investigators and they are telling me that so far they have gathered that that minor has nothing to do with any of the rivalries that are occurring there between gangs in Dangriga, but that it is an incident of probably of mistaken identity or something else. But he does not have to do with anything in terms of shootings previously in that area there.”
