P.M. asks for fairer trade, supports Taiwan

Prime Minister Said Musa took his annual turn at the podium of the United Nations General Assembly this morning. In a concise tightly written address Musa paid homage to the current UN themes and made the case for a better global deal for the developing nations, including increased aid and fairer trade. He then used that subject to slide into the most important paragraph of the speech, in which he applauded the global generosity of the Republic of China on Taiwan. Taiwan, said the P.M., is a good friend of Belize and he went on to give that country our support for UN membership. And while that upcoming resolution on Taiwan will certainly fail due to opposition from the People’s Republic, the support of Belize and other small nations — however obtained — does represent an important milestone in Taiwan’s campaign for global legitimacy. Earlier this week Deputy Prime Minister Johnny BriceƱo addressed a special UN session which looked at the situation of small island developing states.
