James Adderley has weekend football
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is yet another dose of Sports Monday. Sir George Brown’s Acros Bombers made its debut into semi-pro football against no less than the three time defending champion Juventus of Orange Walk yesterday in the friendly confines of the M.C.C. Grounds.
In the opening moments the champions must give way to the exuberance of youth as the Bombers attack. The relentless offense continues but obviously the inexperience of the Bombers at this level is quick to surface. Not many attacks were launched by Juventus in the early goings but Godwin Turner reminds the keeper that he’s always a threat.
Another minus against the Bombers is the size disparity as demonstrated by Godwin Turner on Tyson and maybe Referee David Jones should have blown a foul. As the game progresses Juventus begins to assert itself and it’s a nice outside shot from Cal that startles the keeper but no goal, no harm. The spotkick from Wayne Moody provides problems for the Bombers defense but they get out unscratched.
At the other end it looks like the Bombers will strike first blood but unbelievably this push inches just outside the sticks. Hey guys you must score these ones to be competitive. It’s one more scoring opportunity for the youngsters before half time but the intermission whistle brings a scoreless tie.
We go into second half play and immediately Referee Jones blows a spotkick against Juventus. His raised left hand motions an indirect free kick outside the eighteen and a perfect shot crashes into the back of the net, however, the ball didn’t touch anyone to void the goal. The Bombers try another blast but the target remains elusive. It’s yet another attempt at goal that should have hit the target for the Bombers, but they still come up empty.
The momentum swings when Luis BriceƱo smashes a right foot that beats the keeper to give Juventus a one-zip lead. The icing for Juventus comes by way of a gift. The goalkeeper should have never picked up the ball from Martin Nolberto; it leads to a spotkick inside the penalty bats. The rebound reaches Cal who smacks it home. Juventus wins two-zip to take its season record to two and zero.
Down south Grigamandala and Ambergris Turquoise struggle to a scoreless stalemate inside Dangriga. At San Pedro Yabra Travellers were held to a one-one draw by San Pedro Dolphins. At Cayo Real Verdes battles Sagitun of Independence to a one-one tie while at Capital City, La Victoria burned Belmopan Bandits two to one.
In closing folks Sports Monday says congratulations to Jaheed Smith and Shane Reyes who combined for three gold medals brought back by our juvenile and infant athletes from the fifth Central American Championships last week.
We also want to say kudos to Mateo Cruz of Santino’s Jamis who finished fourth in the Catt Three Race at the Coconut Grove Classic staged in Miami, USA over the weekend.
That’s it. We invite you back same time, same place. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
