Barclays to post international flags at roundabout

Story Picture
To celebrate fifty years in Belize, Barclays Bank is working with the Government of Belize and the Belize City Council to turn the roundabout near Pallotti High School into a landmark the city can be proud of. Today the bank unveiled the plans.

Omar Espejo, Country Manager, Barclays Bank

“The concept is to have a structure that will contain the flags of the nations of CARICOM and of the nations of the Central American Isthmus.

We had initially thought of doing a landscaping project only. We had consulted the government and offered this as a gift to Belize. They had also indicated to us that they also had some other developments that they would have liked to see at the roundabout site. So we agreed that we would look at their plans to see whether we could do more than just the landscaping. Having looked at the plans, we adopted one of the options and because it was a significant project, we have sought the participation of our customers in putting the project together.”

Espejo says the project is valued at three hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars. The bank has contributed the bulk of the project’s cost, eighty thousand dollars but says generous contributions from its larger customers will make the project a reality. Ground breaking ceremonies will take place within a week and the project should be completed by the end of November. Also as part of the anniversary celebration, Barclays Bank will give full scholarships to a sixth former from each district for this school year.
