B.T.L. assists with pre-school construction

Story Picture
Earlier this month a preschool opened in the Port Loyola Division thanks to the Beautiful Beginnings Committee of Jane Usher Boulevard. The Black Orchid Preschool is not yet completed and is temporarily housed in a neighborhood building. Today the committee received a donation from Belize Telecommunications Limited to assist with the construction.

Fred Howard, Chairman, Beautiful Beginnings Project

“In February of this year we did a survey and out of that survey we found that sixty-five to seventy percent of people living here have small children with ages from five years and under. We found out that the majority of them were not in any preschool and it was a concern to us. After we spoke to the community they decided that they would like to have a preschool. So we decided that we would take up the challenge and that’s how it came about.”

Q: “How did B.T.L. get involved in this project?”

Dionne Chamberlain, Public Relations Officer, B.T.L.

“We were approached by Pastor Gillett and Mr. Howard. They came to the office and they were talking to us about the whole project that they were doing. We came over to the place and we were very impressed by the fact that this was all being done by committee members. They’re doing the construction themselves; they’re doing all the work and they really have an interest in the community and that was something that we wanted to help with.

So when they came in and they gave us a list of quantities of items that they had, one of the things that they wanted to start right away with was the construction of the walls. Mr. Howard has even mentioned that they want to open a facility for adults to come in and do computer classes downstairs and everything. It is just something to help the community and it is something that B.T.L. is really proud to be involved in because we want to be able to support people in the areas that really need help the most and this one is very good for us and we’re very pleased.

We wanna congratulate the Beautiful Beginnings Committee because this is a beautiful beginning and we’re happy to be a part of it. We hope that other companies will join in and we hope that we can lend them additional support as the year goes along so that they can open that full facility that he spoke about.”

Howard says they are not running the preschool and day care center to make profit but to assist the children in the community. They charge only twenty dollars a month per child.
