Garifuna Nations Says they Will Take Their Claim “As Far as We Need to”
Garifuna Nation is now calling on G.O.B. to take a hands-off approach to settle Garifuna lands across the country, until those lands are properly demarcated. According to Ellis, Garifuna Nation is prepared to leave no stone unturned in its effort.
On the Phone: Cynthia Ellis, Ambassador, Garifuna Nation
“We are going to turn over every single stone. And, I just need to note that, for us, it is not just a claim, it is a way of being. It is a way of asserting ourselves. We are very clear of who we are as a people. And, the United Nations, UNESCO in 2003 acclaimed that fact as well by identifying the Garifuna as a masterpiece culture for humanity. So, for the sake of our children, for the sake of those who have come before us, for the sake of those who are going to come after us, we are going to continue with this movement to every part of the globe. We are not alone, there are indigenous people like ourselves in Suriname, Jamaica, Caribbean, the United States of America, so we are in alignment with them to take it as far as we need to.”
