Electrification Plans for Petville
The Prime Minister was out in the field today checking the progress of an electrification project for an area across the river from Orange Walk Town. It is part of a larger development plan for the area known as Petville which currently only has a handful of residents. But the Prime Minister says there is demand for more housing in the area and his administration intends to begin distributing house lots for around a hundred families and to then work on some low-interest financing so they can build. Here’s an interview with the PM and Sean Fuller of B.E.L., courtesy the government press office.
Prime Minister John Briceño
“We have started with BWSL, to be able to bring water into this area. And we have been in contact with B.E.L. also to be able to do the same. For them to start to expand their electricity service in this area. Land in Orange Walk Town, we have run out of land. And so to be able to expand the town we have to come across the river and into these areas where it is high land and it will be easy to access. And so we believe that by partnering with B.E.L. and them coming here and expanding the electricity we believe more and more people will be able to move quicker and build their homes in this area.”
Sean Fuller, GM Retail and Commercial Services, B.E.L.
“B.E.L. has a system expansion program where we are canvassing the entire country to determine what areas we have customers who are un-served. And we are expanding our network to serve these new customers. Petville is just one of those para-urban communities around the Orange Walk area that we have already had designs in place and you will be seeing in about two weeks the planting of poles to serve some of the customers that we have already identified to become part of the grid. Today we are here to look at some of the other areas where the government has some additional plans to provide lots for residences and we are looking at these areas to determine how quickly we can get into them to serve the customers.”
