BWC Raising a Stink over Garbage Collection
A garbage issue is brewing in Belize City following a decision taken by City Council that is not sitting well with Belize Waste Control Limited. Late this afternoon, the Council announced via a press release that it is changing the garbage collection schedule from twice weekly to just once a week on both the north and south sides of Belize City. The change in the collection of residential garbage, however, was made without any consultation from the collectors themselves. As quickly as the release was issued, the Belize Waste Control fired back, saying that it was made aware of “an erroneous statement made by Belize City Council” and that there has been no change to the sanitation schedule on its part. BWCL goes on to say that CitCo has not been honouring its contractual payment obligation and is in arrears for over twenty weeks. Belize Waste Control says that this has forced them to adjust its service to ensure that there is no interruption in the collection of garbage. We expect to hear more on this developing story on Wednesday.
