Interim board to run K.H.M.H.
An interim board has been appointed to run the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The office of the Prime Minister announced today that the members representing a wide cross-section of health care providers, professionals, public officers and the private sector comprise the board. The members are Karl Menzies, Cortes Nurse, Deane Musa, Dr. Francis Smith, Dr. John Waight, Matron Ivorine Hemmans, Narda Garcia, Hugh McSweaney, Margaret Ventura, Terry Bedran Stark, Jose Encalada and Anthony Thurton. The board will replace thecurrent administration pending the passing of legislation to make the hospital a statutory body.
At yesterday’s meeting, Cabinet reviewed a prospectus for the sale of Government’s shares in Belize Electricity Limited. Over twelve and a half million shares, representing Government’s fifty-one percent majority ordinary shares will become available on September fourteenth. The expected cost? Two dollars and seventy-five cents a share.
Cabinet also accepted a proposal by the Mennonite Community to set up a school for the deaf. The Empathy for the Deaf Organization will be allowed to use the compound formerly housing the Listowel Boys Training School near Central Farm for construction of the school. The school will have academic programs as well as training in farming, trade and crafts.
