Commitments Would Increase Biodiversity Zones
In terms of the conservation aspects of the agreement, the government has to make specific commitments, it is still negotiating. One of these has to do with biodiversity zones.
Christopher Coye, Minister of State, Finance
“Belize has biodiversity zones and commitments on biodiversity zones already. We have I think between fifteen and twenty percent of medium and high biodiversity zones to which we’re already committed. We are further committed to that by 2030; we will increase the high and medium biodiversity zones to thirty percent. What we’re agreeing [to] under this Blue Bond arrangement is that we would reduce the time within which reach that commitment from 2030 to – I think it’s 2026. So we just saying we will get there faster than what we have already committed to.”
