Coastal Experts Making Headway in Field Assessment
A team of Cuban experts from the Institute of Marine Sciences and GAMMA S.A. have been in Belize over the past two weeks conducting preliminary assessments on coastal erosion in the south. It is being done under a project entitled, “Enhancing the Climate Resilience of Dangriga and Hopkins.” But on Tuesday, the team carried out a field visit in Barranco and Punta Gorda and were accompanied by representatives from the National Climate Change Office, Five-Cs and TIDE. There, the group learned about the experience villagers have been having with severe erosion, despite efforts carried out to address the problem. The Cuban team is expected to complete their research and assessment of Hopkins and Dangriga by next week after which it will be presented to the government. This activity is being funded under the Fourth National Communication and First Biennial Update Report and the Enabling Gender-Responsive Disaster Recovery, Climate Change and Environmental Resilience in the Caribbean projects and the Government of Belize.
