Corozal artist exhibits work at Bliss

The Belize Arts Council invites you to view the sculptures of Vilma Romero of Corozal Town. Romero is best known for the statues she produces from cement, sand, water and gravel. While this is not the first time her works are being exhibited, it is the first time she has been invited to participate in an upcoming show in Mexico. But before the sculptures are transported across the border, the Belizean public can view them at the Belisle Art Gallery. Romero has been working with her hands for the past twenty-six years and says she hopes the public will take the time out to view her latest productions.

“The museum wants to exhibit it in October. They would like to get most of my stuff down. I think they are going to provide the transportation and they are hoping to have a very big exhibition if all goes well in October because this type of work has not really been work by Mexican artists.”

Q: “Do you model the statues from pictures?”

“Well most of the statutes I make. I make it from a creative idea then I start working. I don’t even know the measurement, the height; I go right through. Well this is from a picture because I like it so much because it is from a Mayan piece and it goes with the water, with the endless glasses of water and the water goddess.”

The exhibition at the Belisle Gallery ends September ninth.
