Ex boat captain now builds models

Story Picture
While many might love life on the sea, very few demonstrate their affinity like Alvero Vernon. The ex boat captain has become a shipbuilder but on a much smaller scale. He has transformed the simple elements of wood and glue into his very own works of art, using his memories to inspire his projects. He is also fascinated by the story of the Fantome, a sailing vessel that was lost at sea during Hurricane Mitch.

Alvero Vernon, Boat Builder

“If I really go after it, I could do one of these boats every two and a half days, right up to where it is right now, but it means that it’s a lot of effort that I have to put in it, just soon in the morning to a little bit at night.

The next one I am definitely going to do that one that sunk down. I have big intentions of building the Fantome. And I don’t see nothing will stop me since I did this, I know I can do it.”

Q: “Why did you choose that boat?”

Alvero Vernon

“That’s a historical boat. I read a story on that Fantome and that thing really, it cuts me to pieces because I used to be a captain and I read that story on that Fantome and it really make tears fall in my eyes.”

Vernon says his boats are meant as children’s toys and his sailboats can sail by themselves. If you are interested in having a boat made for your child, you can contact Alvero Vernon at fifty-two New Road in Belize City.
