NGO Organization Congratulates GOB on Blue Bonds

The Belize Network of NGOs has congratulated the government of Belize on the Blue Bonds Initiative the nation’s marine resources. However, they are also asking GOB to guarantee it will not weaken any policies that protect Belizeans who rely on marine resources for their living.  The statement from BNN terms the Blue Bonds an innovative and welcome financial approach to support marine conservation while relieving a significant portion of Belize’s debt obligations. But they urge caution and urge a holistic approach be taken for cruise tourism. They say if GOB were to allow five cruise ports in Belize’s nature-based economy this would be “a walk-back from the spirit of the Blue Bonds Initiative.”  BNN says the fact that the integrity of our natural resources is helping Belize to emerge from quote “its darkest hour” is testament to the fact that we truly are a nature-based economy and the Blue Bonds Initiative is poised to be the catalyst of a new economic chapter for Belize.
