SJC offers first sports scholarship
Last year St. John’s College gave over one hundred thousand dollars in scholarships to students in its high school, sixth form and extension department, in addition to the considerable scholarship assistance from government and the private sector. This year, for the first time, the college is offering a sports scholarship. This morning, SJC President Carlos Perdomo, introduced the young recipient who will also have the chance to play on the college basketball team.

“We are able today to announce something historical for us: our first sports scholarship. This is in branding and making richer the already good tradition that we have with offering scholarships. And the recipient is young Mr. Egbert Cherrington. He is the recipient of our first sports scholarship.”
Cherrington, who was a member of the Belize Under 17 team which represented Belize in Guyana and attended the Center for Employment Training, will be entering SJC’s third form technical program. He says he is determined to succeed.
Egbert Cherrington, Scholarship Recipient
“I went to CET and took courses in electrical and I was successful enough to be a part of St. John’s College. They offered me a scholarship to play on their school team and I thought that it was a great benefit for me to receive this. I take it as a chance with hard work and a lot of studying, I can achieve in two years I could be out of here with a diploma.”
Cherrington will also work with Coach Matthew Smiling and the Director of Sports David Lacey as part one of the conditions of the scholarship.
