James Adderley has the latest on Marion Jones

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and welcome to this serving of Sports Monday. First of all we want to thank Karl Tillett for the wonderful job he did holding down the sports desk and yes we’re glad to be back.

Folks yesterday saw the presentation of a massive criterion event around the Princess Margaret Drive by the Belize Amateur Cycling Association that drew a crowd.

14 mountain bikes are making a bid for the opening 15 lap feature and they’re off. It’s early into the ride when Pedro Delgado makes a brilliant move which creates distance between himself and the pack. Going into the later laps it’s still Delgado fully in command while Rhett from the canal side falls victim to the Delgado pace. And yes give Delgado nuff respect as he delivers the “W” for the Honda Cycle Team in uncontested fashion. In the sprint for second place it’s Troy Burns who was blocking for teammate Delgado who forces the deadly Steven Welch into 3rd.

Meanwhile in the start of the 10 to 15 year class we see 4 riders take off. And at tape time it’s Alfred Canorque with the big time win. Miguel Jones settles for a distant second while Shawn Hart pulls up third.

Now meet the big boys who have come out to play as all 15 pull the trigger for the 30 lap feature. In the early goings it’s Ernest Meighan setting the pace and now Jaw Meighan and Mateo Cruz make a break for it and just like that they emerge the 2 leaders.

The two hold up until money time and while we’re not sure if this is an all-out sprint we’re sure it’s Jaw Meighan of Bel-Chi grabbing the big “W”. Mateo Cruz of Santino’s finishes second. And the veteran Ray Cattouse grabs third place to round out the top 3.

Meanwhile folks Marion Jones begun her quest for 4 gold medals at the World Championship at Sevilla, EspaƱa yesterday with a sizzling performance in the 100 meter which she covered in 10.70 seconds. Marion hopes to win gold also in the 200, the 100 relay and the long jump and let’s hear what she had to say in her post race interview.

Q: “Your first of 4, is this a relief?”

Marion Jones, Gold Medallist, 100m

“Oh it’s definitely a relief! I’ve gotten started into having one. She gave me a hell of a run for my money and I thank her a lot for it. We’re just gonna go on and try to represent the U.S. in the 200m and it’s looking mighty good for a world record now. 4 by 1 stay tuned.

I wanna give a shout out now to my brother in California, the Johnson family, Tiffany, all my family back in Belize. Hello, I love you all.”

Thanks for remembering us Marion Jones and maximum success to you. Hey folks stay tuned to Channel Five if you wanna see the best of the developments of Marion Jones’ career. We are gonna keep you posted. That’s it. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
