Mexico featured at Costa Maya

Over the weekend San Pedro, Ambergris Caye was the place to be with the culmination of the Costa Maya Festival. For those of you who couldn’t be there, News Five is pleased to bring you a taste of the entertainment. Tonight’s coverage is brought to you by the Belize Marine Terminal and the Caye Caulker Water Taxi Association. Here’s Janelle Chanona at Mexico night on Friday.

Celebrations for Mexico in the Costa Maya Festival began under a starry night and quickly became a blend of the traditional and the contemporary.

After a series of dances typical of different regions of Mexico, the crowd was ready for the sounds of the highly anticipated Mexican band, Flashback.

The Ambassador of Mexico, Enrique Hubbard Urrea, explained that this range in music shows the great variety in the Mexican culture.

“We will have, for instance today, a ballet that will present some images that will be familiar because they are from Mayan origin, but we will also bring in some other images, some manifestations of the Mexican culture, from the Highlands and the coasts of the rest of the country. So it is a way of presenting some other manifestations of our culture.”

As the visitors to San Pedro enjoyed the presentations, Ambassador Urrea reminded us that there are Mexican festivals that can showcase Belizeans.

“There is a Caribbean festival that takes place in Cancun where, by the way, usually the highlight is the participation is the music groups coming from Belize. Last year for instance, Andy Palacio and Santino’s were the most greatest success you ever saw. They are always waiting for the Belizean musicians to show up.”

Despite the disappointment of Honduras night, Belizeans and other visitors did show up in large numbers for most of the Costa Maya Festival. Committee member Melanie Halliday attributes the turnout to the committee’s organizational skills.

“The festival within the third day, we believe that it’s a little more organized. Everything has been settled down, everybody is working together, everything is quiet, more down and we believe we are in control of everything. That’s why I believe that Mexico night will be an exciting, more entertaining night.”
