Court refuses to lift injunction in land dispute
The United Democratic Party lost another round in its fight with the P.U.P. government today when the Supreme Court refused to revoke an injunction obtained by the government. That injunction prevented the U.D.P. from interfering with government efforts to enter the property, part of which is occupied by U.D.P. headquarters, and presumably build low income housing on the site. Although it has no legal effect Acting Chief Justice Troadio Gonzalez put on record that he hopes the government will refrain from taking any action on the disputed property until after next Wednesday when he will hear an application by the U.D.P. to have the government’s entire action dismissed. When contacted late this afternoon Opposition Leader Dean Barrow expressed mystification at the nature of the ruling, saying that he was “terribly disappointed and suspicious of how the ruling could have come about.” The previous U.D.P. government granted the U.D.P. the large strip of land south of the BelChina Bridge absolutely free of charge. The present government is seeking to have the grant declared invalid and has said that the U.D.P. must pay for the land it now occupies while the government builds low income housing on the rest.
