Karl Tillett has women’s cricket in Sports Monday

Good evening sports fans and welcome to Sports Monday. I am Karl Tillett sitting in for the inimitable James Adderley once more.
Cricket is a sport born in England and widely played with great passion in England and many of her former possessions. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Pakistan and the Caribbean have a great history in this sport. In Belize the game does not have the prominence it does in these other places but it is played with as great a passion if not the skill of the rest of the world.
On Sunday at Bermudian Landing the attractions included not only the Baboon Sanctuary but cricket was the menu as well, ladies cricket. Certainly a first in Belize! For the first time ever an organized ladies cricket tournament was on top. Four teams from the Belize Rural area vied for this very first championship and at the end of the day it was Double Head Cabbage’s Uptight Female Club who relaxed as winners over Willow’s Bank. Flower’s Bank finished third beating hosts Bermudian Landing in the consolation game. They looked on as Nadine Flowers and Annette McFadzean lead the Uptight females to a 28-27 8 overs victory under the hot Belizean sun.
The skill level might not have been that high but there were flashes that looked like the real thing. Bowled! And again by Annette McFadzean. Wikkets fell all day. And there were some fours and lots of fun for the players and certainly for the fans of the game. Nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon and in the end everyone’s a winner.
On the football scene, it was not a whole lot different from last week. Juventus was involved in another non-affair as they agreed to the cancellation of their match against Saprisa of Costa Rica scheduled to be played in Costa Rica. The match was meaningless and the weather was bad over there so it did not happen. The non-game completed Juventus’ schedule of CONCACAF matches for this tournament. Acros also finished their schedule playing the last of nine matches at the M.C.C. Grounds with a 0-1 loss to Olympia, the Honduran champion. That is an improvement of sorts but a loss is a loss and they finished 1-8. The lone victory coming from a default “W”. Guess it’s wait until next time for Belizean international club level soccer.
That’s it for this edition of Sports Monday. James should be back next week after his sabbatical. Hey, love and light. I’m Karl Tillett saying keep your goals in front of you. Good night.
