Mexicans apprehended trying to smuggle whiskey
But today’s press conference was not called to discuss the Belize City child murders, that was incidental, but to announce the apprehension of seven Mexicans and a Honduran for reportedly trying to steal liquor from the Corozal Free Zone. Around 5:30 yesterday evening police observed three men putting cases of whiskey onto a bicycle cart in the zone compound. Police say they waited about fifteen minutes then intercepted the three men who were also carrying boxes of whiskey on their backs. A fourth man was standing on the path to the main road guarding six more cases. He was also taken into custody. When Inspector Jeffries and his officers arrived back at the station with the suspects, they met Sergeant Tillett who had detained four more men and another bicycle cart with twelve more cases of whiskey. A total of 15 cases of whiskey were impounded. All those detained pending charges claim to reside in Santa Elena, Chetumal. Commissioner Brooks says the police are very concerned about the area around the Free Zone because of the high incidence of smuggling.
