Government offers reward for info on child murders
The candlelight vigil this Monday night for the four murdered Belize City girls has been rescheduled to accommodate the children who want to attend. Myrtle Palacio, chairman for the National Committee for Families and Children says they would like people to begin assembling at the Corner of Euphrates and Kut Avenues at five thirty so the procession can begin at six. It will travel through several streets in the area, stopping at four different corners so that offerings can be made for each murdered child–Sherilee Nicholas, Jay Blades, Jackie Malic, Erica Wills– and their families. Community members will be invited to express their views after the procession. In related news, reports to News Five are that the government will be offering a reward for any information on the killings, which leads to an arrest. We have not been able to confirm the figure, but understand it will be ten thousand dollars. For their part, the United Democratic Party announced on Wednesday that they are seeking donations of cameras and other equipment to set up a school photo identification project. They intend to begin in Belize City and eventually reach the districts in order to make sure every child who registers for school has a photograph on file. The idea was prompted by the discovery that the most recent victim’s family did not have any pictures of her to help in the search when she went missing, or to assist the police who are now investigating her murder.
