Traffic Department raises funds for fire victim
On the night of June twenty-fifth about fifty people were left homeless when their homes were destroyed in the Victoria Street fire. Since the tragedy, the families have been slowly trying to get back on their feet. Some members have been fortunate to get assistance from friends and co-workers. Such is the case of the Lewis family. On Saturday, July seventeenth, the Traffic Department held a barbecue sale for their employee Michael Lewis. Today the staff presented the money raised. Unfortunately, the recipient was not on hand to receive the cash of one thousand, six hundred and fifty dollars. News Five understands Lewis was busy at the Housing Department trying to get–you guessed it–a house. Nevertheless a co-worker received the envelope on his behalf. According to Councilor Danny Madrid the department routinely holds fund raising drives to help those in need.

“This is not the first time that the Traffic Department has done fund raising like that. If you can remember during the time of hurricane Mitch again the Traffic Department got together and had barbecues dinner sales and put the money together and sent it to Honduras. This Traffic Department has always worked together to help when somebody is in need.”
Madrid says they are in the process of setting up a disaster fund for its employees.
